A Family’s Struggle with Motor Neurone Disease
Actor Matt Nable has shared his heart-wrenching experience of losing two family members to motor neurone disease (MND), a cruel and progressive condition that attacks the nervous system. His cousin, Luke Nable, recently received a diagnosis of MND, adding another layer of pain to an already devastating chapter in the Nable family.
Two years ago, Matt lost his brother Aaron, who passed away after a four-year battle with MND. The loss was deeply felt by the entire family, especially as Aaron had been a passionate Australian boxer and a beloved figure in their lives. Now, with his cousin facing the same fate, Matt is once again confronting the harsh reality of this disease.
The Impact on the Nable Family
Matt, known for his roles in popular TV series like Mr Inbetween, The Dry, and Hacksaw Ridge, has spoken openly about the emotional toll of watching loved ones succumb to MND. He described his cousin Luke’s situation on Instagram, sharing the heartbreaking news that Luke, now 35, has been diagnosed with the disease and is currently using a wheelchair. Soon, he will also need a PEG tube inserted into his stomach to help with nutrition.
“This fking disease is just horrible. It is indiscriminate and cruel.**” Matt said, highlighting the unpredictability of MND. “Luke said to his mother, ‘I thought I had more time.’ It broke her heart.”
Despite the challenges, Matt emphasized the importance of fighting back against the disease. He encouraged people to support the GoFundMe page set up for Luke, which helps cover medical expenses and other costs associated with living with MND.
A Personal Connection to MND
Nable’s connection to MND goes beyond his personal losses. Last year, he participated in the AFL’s ‘Big Freeze’ fundraiser, a campaign dedicated to finding a cure for the disease. This initiative was inspired by the tragic passing of football legend Neale Daniher, who also battled MND.
When Aaron was first diagnosed with MND in July 2020, Matt began speaking out about the disease, sharing his experiences and raising awareness. He described how the condition gradually weakens the body, leading to muscle atrophy and eventual paralysis. For those affected, it’s not just a physical struggle but an emotional one that impacts the entire family.
The Emotional Toll
For Matt, the loss of his brother has left a deep void. “You realise when you lose something like this, it’s hard to accept,” he reflected. “I won’t ever be the same. I won’t be whole again and that’s part of life.”
Aaron, who had three young children, was focused on providing for them even as the disease progressed. “He was such a gregarious man. A gentle man, he had a big life,” Matt said. “He touched a lot of people. He was an A-grade scallywag with a beautiful heart.”
The impact of Aaron’s life was evident at his funeral, where over 2,000 people attended. “I don’t even know 2,000 people,” Matt admitted. “But he had a huge impact on a lot of people. He’s really missed.”

Fighting Back Against MND
Despite the pain, Matt continues to use his platform to raise awareness and support for those affected by MND. He believes that every effort counts, whether it’s through fundraising, advocacy, or simply sharing stories.
“Fight as hard as you can,” he urged. “There’s no easy way around it, but we have to keep pushing forward.”
As the Nable family faces another challenge, their resilience and determination serve as a reminder of the strength found in love and community.
