Essendon’s Struggles and Signs of Progress
Essendon has shown some signs of improvement, but it might be too late to prevent the Bombers from experiencing their worst AFL losing streak. With four losses at the start of the season, they are heading into a crucial game against Melbourne at the Adelaide Oval with a 17-game losing streak.
Despite a poor start in recent matches, Essendon managed to rally against the Western Bulldogs last week, showing competitiveness in the second half. This gives hope that the team is beginning to turn things around.
The club’s injury crisis is also easing, with key players returning. Jordan Ridley made his first senior appearance of the season, which is a significant step forward for the team. His return comes after a challenging season where he only played 10 games due to hamstring injuries.
Nate Caddy is set to return from concussion protocols, and Elijah Tsatas will play his first AFL game of the year. Additionally, top-10 draft pick Sullivan Robey is making his senior debut. These developments indicate that Essendon is gradually building a stronger squad.

Equally important for Essendon is the fact that some regulars, such as Archie Perkins and Matt Guelfi, have been omitted from the team. This suggests that the competition for senior spots is intensifying, which could lead to more depth and quality within the squad.
Xavier Duursma, an Essendon utility player, expressed excitement about Ridley’s return. He described Ridley as one of his best mates and praised his skills as an elite ball user and intercept defender. Duursma believes that having Ridley back is a positive step for the team.
“We have some really good, competitive selections – maybe for the first time, with our injury stuff, for 18 months,” Duursma said. “It’s a good spot for the club to be in, to have selection ‘controversy’ and all stuff like that.”

Duursma, who has been at Essendon for three years after five seasons at Port Adelaide, is looking to build on the six finals he played with the Power. He emphasized that there is still a lot of room for growth, especially since Essendon is a young team.
“I just want to be a part of that and help us get there, because I know how much I enjoy winning,” he said.
With the right combination of players and a strong sense of determination, Essendon has the potential to improve its performance. The coming games will be crucial in determining whether the Bombers can break their losing streak and start climbing up the ladder.
