Social Media Backlash Over Zumba Session in Malaysia
A Zumba session themed around “back to school” in Malaysia has sparked a significant social media firestorm and religious backlash. The incident, which involved instructors wearing headscarves but dressed in revealing clothing, has led to investigations by both the police and Islamic authorities.
The aerobics session was live-streamed on a Saturday morning and quickly went viral, drawing criticism from conservative groups who accused the organizers of violating religious and public decency norms in the Muslim-majority country. On Sunday, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) confirmed it had launched an inquiry into the incident, which is believed to have taken place in Kuala Selangor.
JAIS director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad stated that the department viewed the matter seriously. He noted that the event was not only inappropriate but also included elements that could be seen as indecent behavior in a public setting or actions that might bring Islam into disrepute.
As the criticism grew, one of the instructors, identified only as Sabrina, posted an apology video on Sunday. In her video, she claimed that the incident, during which she was seen wearing a headscarf but no skirt, happened “spontaneously” and without the organizer’s awareness.
“I want to apologize for what happened earlier,” she said. “Everything happened spontaneously.”
However, her explanation did little to calm the critics. Many online dismissed her statement, arguing that the outfit could not have been accidental. One user wrote, “There’s no such thing as ‘spontaneous’ if that’s the outfit you chose,” adding that the apology “normalized” wrongdoing. Others suggested that the apology reflected a lack of religious understanding, while some accused those involved of mocking Islam and even warned of divine retribution.
Meanwhile, the police have opened an investigation into possible offenses related to public decency, breach of peace, and misuse of communication platforms. This controversy follows a series of recent morality disputes that have stirred up Malaysian social media. In late December, police detained two individuals after a video showing a man in a headscarf drinking alcohol at a hair salon went viral, causing similar public outrage.
