Virginia’s Family: Arrest Lifts Broken Hearts

Royal Arrest Sparks Hope for Justice, Family Hails “Heroine”

The family of Virginia Giuffre has expressed profound relief and gratitude following the arrest of Prince Andrew, stating their “broken hearts have been lifted” by the news that no one, not even royalty, is above the law. The late Ms. Giuffre, who tragically passed away last year, was a pivotal figure in the fight for justice against those linked to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. She had accused the former prince of sexually assaulting her on three separate occasions when she was a teenager.

Sky and Amanda Roberts, Ms. Giuffre’s brother and sister-in-law, alongside her parents Danny and Lanette Wilson, released a joint statement conveying their deep emotions. “At last,” they declared. “Today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty.” They extended their heartfelt gratitude to the UK’s Thames Valley Police for their diligent investigation and subsequent arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

“He was never a prince,” the family asserted, highlighting their belief that Ms. Giuffre’s actions were for the benefit of all survivors. “For survivors everywhere, Virginia did this for you.” The Giuffre family has a long history of supporting efforts to hold individuals connected to Jeffrey Epstein accountable. Epstein, who notoriously trafficked Ms. Giuffre for sex when she was a mere 16 years old, cast a long shadow over the lives of many.

Recalling the moment Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal titles last year, Mr. Roberts shared his immense pride. “This normal girl from a normal family has taken down a prince. We are so proud of her,” he stated, underscoring the extraordinary courage displayed by Ms. Giuffre.

A Step Towards Accountability for Epstein’s Victims

David Boies, Ms. Giuffre’s former legal counsel who played a crucial role in brokering the settlement in her civil case against Prince Andrew, described the arrest as a significant development. “This is an important step towards justice for Epstein’s victims and accountability for their abusers,” Mr. Boies commented. “Hopefully, there are many more steps to come.”

His colleague, Sigrid McCawley, echoed this sentiment, labelling the moment as “truly a monumental moment in the Epstein survivors’ relentless pursuit of justice.” Ms. McCawley emphasised Ms. Giuffre’s unwavering dedication over the years. “Virginia Roberts Giuffre worked for years to shine a light on the crimes being committed by Epstein and his co-conspirators and to send the message that no one should be above the law, and the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on Thursday is a step toward that accountability.”

Maria Farmer, who holds the distinction of being the first known victim to report Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell to the police in 1996, lauded Ms. Giuffre as a “heroine that took on the royals and won.”

“Today is just the beginning of accountability and justice brought forth by Virginia Giuffre, a young mother who adored her daughter so deeply,” Ms. Farmer proclaimed. “She fought the most powerful on earth to protect her. She did this for everyone’s daughters. Let’s now demand all the dominos of power and corruption begin to fall.”

Ms. Farmer shared a close friendship with Ms. Giuffre, whose untimely death last year left a void in the lives of many. “I know Virginia can feel this, no matter where she is,” Ms. Farmer added, her voice filled with emotion. “This is epic, it’s changing the world. She’s a hero. I hope it’s the beginning of a much larger takedown. This is a real-life story of a heroine that took on the royals and won.”

Calls for Broader Action and Transparency

Another survivor of Epstein’s abuse, Marijke Chartouni, expressed her encouragement at the decisive action taken by British authorities. However, she also posed a poignant question: “But how much pain could have been avoided had the Justice Department acted and shared this information years ago?” This sentiment highlights a broader concern about the timeliness and effectiveness of justice systems in addressing such complex and far-reaching cases.

US politician Suhas Subramanyam, who has previously advocated for Prince Andrew to be questioned under oath by the US Oversight Committee, pointed to the extensive documentation that implicates the former prince. “He [Andrew] appears repeatedly in the documents we have uncovered as having knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes and is specifically named by victims as someone who engaged in wrongdoing,” Mr. Subramanyam stated.

“Yet he has continued to ignore our calls to co-operate with the Oversight Committee’s investigation,” he continued. “We hope today’s arrest will lead to answers and show that there will be accountability even if you hide, regardless of how rich and powerful you are.”

The arrest, which coincidentally fell on Prince Andrew’s 66th birthday, drew commentary from various public figures. Royal author and former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown remarked on X (formerly Twitter): “Happy birthday, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Finally, accountability for the endlessly protected brother of the king.”

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy reiterated the principle that “nobody in this country is above the law” and stressed that the police investigation “must happen in the usual way.”

However, the SNP’s Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, voiced a different perspective, suggesting that the delay in action was a mistake. “The former prince should have been stripped of his titles and roles as quickly as possible – it was a mistake for the Labour government to delay action,” he commented. The ongoing developments continue to be closely watched, with many hoping for a comprehensive resolution and justice for all victims.
