Manchester United have reportedly decided not to pursue a high-profile summer transfer for Cole Palmer, despite ongoing speculation about the 24-year-old’s future at Chelsea. The England international has been a standout performer since his £40 million move from Manchester City in 2023, earning the Premier League Young Player of the Year award and delivering impressive stats over the past two seasons.
Palmer’s impact at Chelsea has been significant, with 42 goal involvements in his first season and 18 goals last term as the club secured a place in the Champions League, won the Club World Cup, and claimed the Conference League. This season, he has continued to score regularly, but his form has dipped, raising concerns about his role in Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
There have been reports suggesting that Palmer is unsettled at Stamford Bridge, with some outlets claiming he would be open to a move to Manchester United, the club he supported as a child. The Daily Express reported that Palmer has been impressed by the club’s recent revival under Michael Carrick, who is seen as a strong candidate to take over as permanent manager. However, despite these whispers, it appears that United are not prioritising the winger as a key target for the summer.
The Red Devils are instead focusing on strengthening their midfield and defense, with plans to sign at least two central midfielders and two defenders. If United were to change their stance, Chelsea is reportedly asking for around £90 million for Palmer.

Even though interest in Palmer may have cooled, it seems unlikely that the playmaker will remain at Chelsea beyond his current contract, which runs until 2033. Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has suggested that Palmer needs to leave the club to “rediscover his game.”
Townsend told BetVictor: “First and foremost, Cole Palmer needs to rediscover his game. From where he was a year ago, compared to where he is now is chalk and cheese.” He added that Palmer is looking for inspiration within the team, questioning whether there are players who can motivate him.
“The problem might be at a club like Chelsea when so much traffic comes and goes,” Townsend said. “He might eventually think he’s the one that has to go.”

Townsend also highlighted the potential for other players to leave Chelsea, including Enzo Fernandez, and noted that the constant movement of talent can be frustrating for young players. “If you’re going to keep seeing better players come in and then go, or the best young talent being sold for profit, then sometimes after a while it can frustrate you,” he said.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at some point if things don’t rapidly improve, that he turns around and says: ‘I think I might have to go elsewhere.’”

Chelsea currently sit ninth in the Premier League ahead of their match against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend. The club faces a challenging season, with questions surrounding its direction and player development.
