Referee Addresses Criticism After Nigeria’s AFCON Exit
Accusations and disappointment have followed Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea after his officiating during Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final loss to Morocco. The Super Eagles were eliminated from the prestigious tournament on Wednesday night in Rabat, falling 4-2 in a penalty shootout to the host nation after a goalless stalemate through regulation and extra time. The crucial saves by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou against Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi ultimately sealed Nigeria’s fate at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Laryea’s performance in the high-stakes encounter drew significant backlash from Nigerian players, fans, and media personalities. Numerous decisions made by the official throughout the match were scrutinized and questioned, fueling widespread discontent.
During a chance encounter in Rabat with Sporty TV pundit Klinton Cod, the referee was directly confronted about the growing criticism. Cod commented, “The game was crazy, and you know my fellow Nigerians are not happy with you.”
In response, Laryea appeared to downplay the controversy, stating, “No, it’s okay. It’s football.” This brief remark offered little solace to those who felt aggrieved by the officiating.
Player’s Perspective on Officiating
Among the Nigerian contingent who openly voiced their dissatisfaction was full-back Bright Osayi-Samuel. He described the refereeing as “appalling” but was careful to note that it was not the sole reason for the Super Eagles’ defeat. Osayi-Samuel acknowledged the pain of the loss, despite believing his team delivered a strong performance. He articulated that several of the referee’s decisions significantly disrupted the game’s flow.
“One thing I would say is that the referee was appalling, not saying that that’s the reason why we lost, but he was making very wrong decisions, and it’s really painful to see referees like that in a big game like today,” Osayi-Samuel stated.
Social Media Backlash and Allegations
The criticism quickly escalated on social media platforms, with fans dissecting perceived inconsistencies in disciplinary actions. Statistics highlighted that Nigeria was penalized for 29 fouls compared to Morocco’s 19. However, Nigeria received two yellow cards, while the Moroccan team was not cautioned at any point during the match. This disparity fueled accusations of bias and a questioning of the overall standard of refereeing at the tournament.
Commentators and media figures joined in the debate, raising concerns about the neutrality of the officiating. Reports also emerged suggesting that Nigerian fans engaged in mass reporting of Laryea’s Instagram account, which reportedly led to its temporary suspension.
Pre-existing Rivalries and Tournament Concerns
Further adding to the controversy, some fans expressed dismay at the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to appoint a Ghanaian official for such a critical fixture, citing the long-standing and often intense rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana. This historical context amplified the scrutiny and suspicion surrounding Laryea’s decisions.
Nigeria’s defeat marked the end of their aspirations to secure a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title. The Super Eagles ultimately concluded their campaign by securing a bronze medal after winning the third-place playoff match against Egypt on Saturday. The tournament’s officiating standards, however, remained a talking point long after the final whistle of the semi-final.
