Hurt City Rolls the Dice on Injuries in Cut-Throat Final

Melbourne City Faces Crucial Challenge in Auckland

Melbourne City, the reigning A-League Men champions, is preparing for a high-stakes journey to Auckland as they aim to keep their title defense alive. The team’s recent performance has been a rollercoaster, with a dramatic late loss to Adelaide United forcing them into a home elimination final against Auckland. This challenging situation has prompted coach Aurelio Vidmar to take bold decisions, including potentially risking injured players to secure a win.

City had a strong start, leading Adelaide 1-0 on Sunday evening and looking set to finish third and host a home elimination final. However, Adelaide mounted a remarkable comeback, winning 2-1 and moving ahead of Auckland into second place. This shift means that City will now face a difficult challenge at Go Media Stadium next Saturday, where they must overcome their recent struggles in Auckland.

Vidmar remains confident in his team’s ability to bounce back from setbacks. “Well we have to. There’s no hiding from the fact that we’ve got to go travel to Auckland and it’s not a place that we’ve done well over our last two visits there,” he said. “But it’s a final.”

Despite a 3-0 loss to Auckland in February, the team finds motivation in their recent Asian Champions League Elite run, where they reached the round of 16. Captain Aziz Behich believes this experience can boost the team’s confidence. “We’ve done it before. We’ve gone to difficult places,” Behich said. “And if there’s anything that’s going to give this group confidence, it’s the away games that we’ve got wins in Asian Champions League. So we’re going to have to go there with the right mentality, the right energy, obviously, the right game plan. But it’s finals football. It’s a one-off game.”

Another source of optimism for City is the form of winger Marcus Younis, who has scored seven goals and provided three assists since joining on loan in January. Behich expressed hope that Younis could continue his impressive performances this weekend. “Hopefully he’s got a few more in the bag left this weekend,” he said.

Younis’s performance could be crucial for his chances of being selected for the Socceroos pre-World Cup training camp. “Look, he’s doing everything right at the end of the day,” Behich added. “Getting selected or not, that’s up to the boss. So as long as he keeps doing the right things and performing on the weekend, you always give yourself a chance, and the boss is showing that he does give opportunities.”

However, City will be without several key players due to injuries. Samuel Souprayen (knee) and Kavian Rahmani (achilles) are out, while Ryan Teague (knee) is unlikely to play. Andrew Nabbout (soreness) will need to prove his fitness, but Nathaniel Atkinson (soreness) and Daniel Arzani (hamstring) could return. Vidmar has indicated that the team may “roll the dice” on those players.

Behich highlighted the importance of these potential returns. “They looked good last week, but I’m pretty sure even if they’re slightly off it they’re going to put their hand up because they know what’s on the line.” This determination and resilience will be essential as Melbourne City prepares for the crucial match in Auckland.
