Boxing Champion Anthony Joshua’s Homecoming Shattered by Tragic Road Accident
Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s highly anticipated return to Nigeria for end-of-year celebrations was tragically marred by a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and personal trainers. The incident, which occurred just hours after his arrival, cast a dark shadow over what should have been a joyous reunion with family in Sagamu, Ogun State.
Joshua, who had recently secured a decisive sixth-round knockout victory against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami, USA, arrived in Nigeria accompanied by two dear friends and professional associates: Sina Ghami, a British national, and Ayodele Kelvin Lateef, a British-Nigerian, sharing a similar heritage with Joshua himself.
The festive homecoming took a grim turn approximately six hours after landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. While en route to his hometown of Sagamu, the chauffeur-driven Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his companions was involved in a horrific collision. The vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a mere ten-minute drive from Sagamu.
The immediate aftermath of the crash was catastrophic. Both Sina Ghami and Ayodele Kelvin Lateef sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony Joshua, though present in the vehicle, escaped with minor injuries. The driver, identified as Kolawole Adeniyi, also survived the ordeal.
Official Confirmation and Investigation
The Ogun State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) swiftly confirmed the incident. Official statements attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
CSP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, provided details regarding the accident. “The Ogun State Police Command confirms that world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident today, Monday, December 29, 2025, at about 11:00 am, in the Makun area of Ogun State,” CSP Odutola stated. “The incident occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, just before Danco Filling Station near the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound axis. The Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua was involved in circumstances currently being investigated. He was seated at the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries, and is receiving medical attention.”
CSP Odutola further expressed the Command’s condolences: “Tragically, two other passengers lost their lives at the scene. The deceased have been deposited at the Livewell Hospital morgue in Sagamu. The Ogun State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assures the public that a thorough investigation has commenced.”
High-Profile Visits and Condolences
News of the accident prompted immediate responses from government officials. A joint statement from the Ogun and Lagos State governments revealed that Governors Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited Joshua at the hospital, remaining with him for several hours to monitor his condition and ensure his stability.
Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Abiodun, and Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, jointly conveyed Governor Abiodun’s sentiments: “As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and was later joined by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We both took charge of the situation, oversaw Anthony Joshua’s care, and remained at the hospital for over seven hours.”
Other notable figures who visited Joshua included the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was also briefed on the incident and subsequently spoke with Anthony Joshua, his mother, and Governor Abiodun, offering his sympathies.
The British High Commission was also actively involved. Mr. Simon Field, the Deputy Head of Mission, met with Joshua and the governors. The families of the deceased were also contacted through the High Commission, facilitating communication and support during this difficult time.
Community Grief and Family Perspectives
The accident, occurring on Monday, December 29, has been widely described as “one crash too many,” casting a somber pall over the festive season and plunging the Sagamu community, and particularly Joshua’s family, into profound grief.
Mr. Adedamola Joshua, the boxer’s 75-year-old uncle, spoke of the family’s shock and devastation. “Anthony Joshua’s unfortunate crash has left the family hollow and in shock,” he stated. “This is not the first, second, or third time he would be coming home, so what went wrong? Why now? He had just arrived six hours earlier, eager to see his family in Sagamu, only for things to turn out this way. He could have spent time with influential Nigerians, but he insisted on going straight to Sagamu, and then this tragedy occurred.”
Describing his nephew, the retired structural engineer fondly recalled Joshua’s humility and grounded nature. “He is humble and homely, never letting his global status affect his character. Anthony Joshua still prostrates for elders. He relates well with people; only some locals may struggle to understand him because of his strong British accent. He has always been exceptional, taking the family name across the world and remaining humble despite being a Member of the British Empire. This accident is a tragedy too many, especially with the death of these two young men. No one saw it coming. It is extremely painful that it happened as he came home to reconnect with his roots.”
Mr. Adedamola highlighted Joshua’s consistent tradition of returning home during festive periods to connect with his family, a practice deeply rooted in his heritage as both his parents hail from Sagamu.
Criticism of Emergency Response and Public Conduct
Amidst the tragedy, Joshua’s uncle also voiced concerns about the emergency response. He expressed dismay at what he perceived as a “lackadaisical attitude of our government towards emergencies,” particularly noting the visual evidence of Joshua crossing the median after the crash, suggesting a lack of immediate and proper evacuation protocols. “I want to condemn the lackadaisical attitude of our government towards emergencies. Someone in trauma should be evacuated promptly. If this had happened abroad, a helicopter would have arrived within minutes. Graphic scenes are now circulating on social media. The government must deploy more ambulances along that stretch of road.”
Furthermore, he condemned the behavior of some bystanders who, instead of offering assistance, were reportedly recording the scene and, in some instances, engaging in theft. “Instead of helping, people were recording videos, and some even stole from accident victims. We even heard Joshua’s phone was stolen. These attitudes must be discouraged, and emergency responders must act promptly and cordon off accident sites.” Mr. Adedamola stressed the need for greater public awareness regarding emergency procedures and the importance of immediate reporting of accidents.
The emotional toll on the family is immense. “The crash cast a shadow over our celebration. How can you celebrate when your son is in the hospital and two friends, who came to spend the holidays with him, are taken away in body bags? It has shaken the Joshua family to its core. Since our great-grandfather, Chief Adebambo Joshua, passed away in 1964, we have never been this heartbroken.” While relieved by Joshua’s discharge from the hospital, the family continues to mourn the loss of Ghami and Lateef, recognizing their significant contributions to the boxer’s career.
“The Joshua family at home and abroad sincerely shares in this painful moment with the families of Sina Ghami and Ayodele Kelvin Lateef. We pray God will comfort everyone and grant the souls of our departed brothers eternal rest,” Adedamola concluded. He acknowledged the possibility of Joshua being hesitant to return home in the future but emphasized the family’s unwavering support and prayers.
Otunba Bayo Onafuwa, the Bamofin of Remo Land and senior chief of the Akarigbo, echoed the sentiment of tragedy, describing the accident as a significant blow to the Sagamu community. He offered commiserations to the bereaved families and expressed confidence in Joshua’s resilience, stating, “Our God is wonderful. We sincerely believe Anthony Joshua will bounce back stronger from this experience.”
Driver Arraigned in Court
In response to the incident, the driver of the Lexus SUV, Kayode Adeniyi, 46, was arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate’s Court by the Ogun State Police Command. He faces charges including dangerous and reckless driving, driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, and driving without due care, which resulted in bodily harm, death, and property damage. Adeniyi was granted bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties and was remanded pending the fulfillment of these conditions. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for trial.
