Matt Fitzpatrick Brings Brother Alex to PGA Tour After Zurich Classic Victory

A Historic Win for the Fitzpatrick Brothers

In a thrilling conclusion to the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick showcased their resilience and skill, securing a remarkable victory with a final-round birdie on the last hole. This win not only marked a significant milestone in their careers but also made history as the first brothers to claim the team event title.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who had already won the RBC Heritage just a week prior, became the first player in over two years to achieve back-to-back victories on the PGA Tour. Additionally, he made history as the first Englishman to secure three wins in a single American season. His standout moment came on the par-five 18th hole, where a 35-yard bunker shot set up a tap-in for his brother, Alex, resulting in a final score of 31 under par and avoiding a potential three-way playoff.

The duo started the day with a four-stroke lead, but their path to victory was not without challenges. A bogey on the 14th hole narrowed their advantage after Matt’s drive landed behind a tree and Alex’s recovery shot rebounded off another obstacle, leading to a double bogey on the 12th. Despite these setbacks, the brothers remained focused and ultimately triumphed.

Alex, who played a crucial role in the final-round foursomes by holing the winning putt, earned a PGA Tour card through 2028. He also secured exemptions to the next four Signature Events, including the upcoming US PGA Championship and the 2027 Players Championship.

The pair faced strong competition from teams such as Kristoffer Reitan and Kris Ventura from Norway, and the American duo of Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer, who were already in the clubhouse at 30 under par. However, Matt’s exceptional sand save on the final hole set the stage for a pivotal birdie that would seal the victory.

Speaking about the win, Matt reflected on the challenges they faced: “It was a struggle. I was doing absolutely zero to help him apart from the putt I made on 15. I wasn’t providing much support, but he was fantastic on the back nine.”

Alex, ranked 141st in the world, has until 5pm local time (8pm BST) on Monday to officially join the PGA Tour to be eligible for the $20 million (£14m) Cadillac Championship, which will take place at US president Donald Trump’s Doral resort in Florida.

He expressed his excitement about the achievement: “It won’t sink in – I’ve got a flight booked for Turkey tonight (as he was scheduled to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open on the DP World Tour). It’s amazing to be here with him (Matt), mum and dad. It’s as good as it gets.”

The Impact of Their Victory

This historic win not only highlights the talent and determination of the Fitzpatrick brothers but also underscores the growing influence of British golfers on the international stage. Their success serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and reinforces the importance of perseverance and teamwork in sports.

As the golfing world celebrates this achievement, the Fitzpatrick brothers have solidified their place in the annals of PGA Tour history. Their journey from a challenging start to a triumphant finish exemplifies the spirit of competition and the rewards of hard work and dedication.
